And wouldn’t it be better to simply opt for companies such as Yelp and Facebook where you can claim your page for free? Well, I firmly believe all eCommerce businesses need to sign up with companies such as Shopper Approved. But how do these companies operate?
- You sign up and begin paying a monthly subscription (this can be paid annually).
- Shopper Approved, Trustpilot etc will install software on your site.
- From then on, a prompt will appear on the screen whenever somebody completes a purchase. The prompt asks the customer to leave a review.
- Online review syndicators automate the process of asking for reviews from your customers. So, they automatically send emails or SMS asking your customers to review the products that they purchased from you.
- You get a wide range of tools allowing you to gather reviews both on and offline. These can be apps, SMS tools and other offline tools to gather reviews.

3. Google Customer Reviews
If you don’t want to pay to have reviews on your site syndicated to Google, then you should consider the Google Customer Reviews option. However, here is a little bit of warning; Google Customer Reviews may end up not being entirely free, at the end of the day.
That’s because you will have to hire someone to do the integration onto your site. You may also need to hire someone to do ongoing maintenance work on your site. You can do it yourself if you are a developer. Otherwise, you will need someone to do the work for you.
How does Google Customer Reviews work?
Once you have integrated Google Customer Reviews on your site, your customers will get the Google Customer Reviews opt in form the moment they complete a purchase. If they opt in, they opt in, they will be asked to take part in a survey. The feedback that they leave is then used by Google for Seller Ratings.
4. Gather Reviews using your Facebook Page

5. Manually ask your customers to review your business
Here I use the word “manually,” to imply that you will not be using any automated tools to gather reviews from your customers. This is something that eCommerce business can do. It works if you don’t sell that many products. Otherwise you are going to be swamped.
If you sell only a few big products every day, you can get on the phone to ask your customers for feedback. Have them review your business on platforms such as Yelp, TripAdvisor (for those in the travel industry), and elsewhere. It works!

The great thing is that you can claim your page on Yelp free of charge. So, there is nothing stopping you from doing so, even if you are a small business. Yelp does have paid components. You can also do Yelp ads to reach more people.
Just to highlight why Yelp is important; a drop of a star on the platform can translate into a 5-9% drop in your revenue. That only goes to show the power of online reviews. They are not only for show. They have a very meaningful impact on your business’ bottom-line.
8. Make it worthwhile for people to leave reviews on your site
To be frank, most people are not inclined to review a business. So, what do you do to get reviews from your eCommerce business customers? How do you motivate them to give you feedback? Well, one thing that you can do is to make it worth people’s while to review your business.
What do I mean by that? I hesitate to say that you should bribe your customers to get them to give you feedback. But that's exactly what needs to be done! As an example, you can offer a person 10% of their next purchase should they leave a review on your site. That’s a bribe right?
Well, let’s call it a clever incentive. Clever in that it has the added bonus of serving as an incentive for a person to come back to your site the next time that they wish to buy something. It means that they will always have your business in mind, which is great.
9. Get people to check into their Social Media platforms while in your establishment
This is another clever method of getting people to review your business. Simply get them to check-in while in your establishment. Perhaps you can offer them free WiFi as an incentive. This is something that you will see a lot with restaurants and hotels.
You may have come upon profiles on Facebook indicating that a person has just booked into such and such a hotel. Or they are having dinner at such and such an eatery. That’s a great way of marketing your business. In most instances, these check-ins will remain on people’s social media profiles. That means they will be accessible well into the future.
