Are you a stay-at-home mom? Are you looking for passive income ideas to help you get along in these difficult economic times? If yes, then you have come to the right place. Hi there, my name is Francisco, and I am the owner of Planet Marketing, a Digital Marketing agency. My company specializes in Facebook Ads, Google Ads, Affiliate Marketing and Remarketing. The subject of passive income is one in which I am very well versed. Over the past 10 years, I haven’t worked for anyone other than myself! And I can tell you that life has been great for me! I wake up whenever I feel like waking up and my life is not dictated by somebody else as if I am a robot. And I don’t have to worry about where the next paycheck because, hey, I have already build up enough passive income sources to last me a lifetime. So, I can afford to work from the beach and I am not worried about losing my job or anything. Anyway, this article is not about me. It’s about stay at home moms and how they can help their families by building reliable passive income sources;
- Give a brief definition of passive income
- Show you why it’s important to get passive income
- Give you 6 great passive income ideas for stay at home moms
What is passive income?
Passive income is something that we all dream about. I mean, when I was still working for other people, my life was full of stress. Back then, I looked at passive income as something that could liberate me from a life of being ordered around as if I was a mere kid. Anyway, the following is the definition of passive income;
Passive income refers to regular earnings that you get from sources other than your employer. You get passive income from businesses in which you have no direct participation.
Do you know what Warren Buffet says about Passive income?
“If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die.”
Warren Buffet
That pretty much sums it up about passive income. The whole aim is to make sure that you don’t work till you drop dead.
An Example of Passive Income
If you buy billiards tables and place them in a pub, that’s passive income. The only work that you are going to have to do afterwards is to collect your money. I know, even that can be a chore, but who is complaining? That’s just one example of passive income.
Does passive income mean you don’t do any work?
Passive income does not mean you do not actively work to generate money. To be frank, nobody out there is going to simply hand you money for free. In most instances, you actually need to put in some initial work to build your passive income streams. Even when you have your passive income sources up and running, you usually need to periodically put in a bit of work to make sure that everything remains in place.
Why it’s important to get passive income
Relying on formal employment as a source of income is, in my view, one of the biggest modern day forms of slavery. If you really want to live a healthy, happy life, you need to liberate yourself, and nothing does that better than passive income. The following are some of the reasons why you should consider finding passive income sources;
- Your
money will roll in without you having to put in regular work. - Passive
income allows you to be your own boss. - If
you are a stay at home mom, passive income allows you to take care of your kids
on a full time basis. - Passive
income can be a great supplement for regular income. - You
can work from anywhere once you have build a mature passive income stream.

Perhaps you are a great cook, or even a terrible one. Whatever the case, there can be no doubting that people love to eat. And they love cooking shows. As a housewife, cooking is probably something that you already do on a daily basis. So, it’s a simple enough matter to start talking about it.

How to Monetize a Blog
Okay, so, you have created a world class blog and have developed quite a loyal audience. I know, to get there you will need to go through a number of hurdles, but after building your blog, the next thing that you are going to need to do is monetize your creation. You have a number of options in this regard;
- Google AdSense: Stay at home moms can monetize their blogs using Google AdSense. How AdSense works is you get sign up and then ads get delivered to your website. You get paid either when people click on the ads or per thousand views. To be frank, the payout from Google AdSense is rather miniscule. You need to have thousands of daily visitors to your site to earn something meaningful.
- Write a Book: You can write a book that you sell through your website. Many stay at home moms do this. Again, the point is, you may think that your life is pretty banal, but there are thousands and thousands of people out there who would give an arm and a leg to know what you know. You can, as an example, write a recipes book. You can then sell this either via your website or through Amazon.
- Create courses: Courses have become a popular options for freelancers who are looking to monetize their sites. I have courses that I sell to people who want to learn how to create Facebook Ads.
- Monetize your site using Amazon Associates: Amazon is a haven for household products. If you have things that you use around your own household, and if you have a big enough following, you can monetize your blog by selling these household goods on behalf of Amazon. You then get paid a commission per sale.
Become a Social Media Influencer
As a stay at home mom, you probably have some personalities who you follow religiously online, including on social media. Maybe it’s that fitness guru who makes getting a shapely body look so easy. Or it could be that amazing actress who has a million followers on Instagram.
Whatever the case, the good news is that you can create a following of your own to become an influencer. Again, the point that you need to impress upon yourself is that though you may think that your life is banal and uninspiring, it’s actually interesting enough that you can have thousands of followers of your own.

YouTube Videos
The great thing about YouTube is that you don’t need to be a professional video guru to make it on the platform. YouTube thrives on amateurish content and you, as a stay at home mom, can capitalize on this to produce you own content. There are thousands of stay at home moms on YouTube who have already done what we are talking about here. They have managed to turn their channels into popular go to places for masses across the globe. The following is how stay at home moms can develop passive income sources via YouTube;
Come up with an idea of what you will be talking about
There are thousands of things on which you can dwell when it comes to YouTube. However, you need to be aware that some ideas tend to be more popular than others. The following are some of the topics that stay at home moms can cover on their YouTube channels. The techniques that you use here are more or less similar to how you develop your ideas for a blog.
- Cooking: People love cooking shows and you will likely develop a good audience if you are good at it. If cooking is already something that you do on a daily basis, then it’s not such a big leap to go from there to recording video for YouTube.
- Raising Kids: This is another popular area that you can focus on for your YouTube videos. You can create your very own reality show featuring your family.
- Turn your kids into stars: A lot of people out there generate passive income by turning their kids into YouTube stars. Perhaps you have a child that loves to cook. Why not record them doing their thing? That’s one good way of developing a monetizable audience on YouTube. Or perhaps, you have bratty kids who are a handful. You can turn the frustration into capital by recording YouTube videos.
- Home decoration: Home decoration is another area that’s popular with people on YouTube and elsewhere. Stay at home moms who are good at it can record videos for sharing on the platform. Even if you are a terrible home decorator, you can record your terribleness for sharing on YouTube. That’s another great thing about YouTube. You don’t actually need to be good at what you do to develop an audience. In fact, you are much more likely to get an adoring troop of fans if your are terrible at what you do.
Create your YouTube Channel
This is the next step for stay at home moms who are looking to come up with sources of passive income. Now that you have a good idea of what you are going to be talking about, you can create a YouTube channel. Creating a YouTube channel is simple enough and you will be done in a matter of minutes.
Promoting your Channel
Promoting your YouTube channel is one of the most important steps on the path to creating a passive income stream on the platform. The thing to note for YouTube is that your content is going to be your number 1 promotional tool. If you have interesting content, people will watch your videos and subscribe to your channel. And once you have reached a critical mass of subscribers, your growth will become self sustaining and exponential. You can also promote your YouTube channel via social media. Get your friends and family to do the initial sharing on Facebook, as an example, and your videos will reach lots of people.
Monetizing a YouTube Channel
How to monetize a YouTube channel is a subject that deserves it’s very own blog post. The best way to monetize YouTube videos is through Google AdSense. Unfortunately, YouTube now requires that you have at least 1000 subscribers before you are allowed to monetize your site via AdSense. So, you need to really work to develop your audience in order to make it worth your while.
Another way of monetizing your YouTube channel is by having links to your blog or to a landing page embedded on the video. That way, people can click on the link and when they do, they are taken to a page where you can then try to sell them a course, a download or any other thing.
Affiliate Marketing
Today, one cannot really talking about passive income without talking about affiliate marketing. Affiliate Marketing is a subject about which I am particularly passionate. See, my website, planetmarketing.com partly gets monetized through affiliate marketing. Not only am I an affiliate for tens of companies whose products and services I sell through my site, but I also run my very own affiliate marketing program. Check on this site and you will notice that I sell a number of digital marketing products, including my DIY Facebook Ads Marketing Course, my Google Ads Setup Plan and much more. People can sign up to become affiliates to help me sell these products.
What is affiliate marketing?
Check out my article on how affiliate marketing works if you wish to learn more about the topic. I am not going to explain much in this article. All that I can say is that; in brief, affiliate marketing is a marketing model under which brands engage the services of affiliates to sell products and services at a commission.
Who can become an affiliate?
There are no restrictions on who can become affiliates. There are probably millions of affiliates out there among whom are students, office workers, freelancers, stay at home moms, dads and many more. All that you need is a little imagination and you can get started with affiliate marketing. The thing to note is that affiliates, in today’s world, are mostly publishers. What I mean is that though you can become an affiliate without a blog or a YouTube channel, it’s going to be difficult for you to sell anything to anyone.
Affiliate marketing for stay at home moms
Stay at home moms are particularly suited to join affiliate marketing. However, the first thing that you are going to need to do is create your blog or YouTube channel as outlined above. Once that is done, affiliate marketing then becomes one of the ways through which you can monetize your channels.
Build an audience
The thing to keep in mind when it comes to affiliate marketing for stay at home moms is that, you need to be focused. You are not going to create a very viable channel by being all over the place. What do I mean by that? Well, what you need to do right from the onset is to have a mindset that your YouTube channel or your blog is a business. I know, it may also be a hobby, but you need to think of it as business. And the one good way that you can create a viable online business is by building a loyal audience. How do you do that? Well, you do that by talking about things that people are interested in. If you talk about a subject that only you are interested in, you are probably not going to have much success building your passive income stream. Focus on a popular topic, and you will be good to go.
An example
Just to give an example, there are people on YouTube, including Mark Wiens, who have build channels that get millions of view by focusing on street food. These people have pretty much cornered this niche. In fact, YouTube videos have become their full time profession. They have hundreds of thousands of subscribers to their channels.
Imagine, however, what would happen should Mark Wiens suddenly shift focus and starts posting auto servicing videos. Let’s say he publishes on his street food channel a video showing how to DIY service his vehicle. Now, if he does that once, his street food audience may simply be amused. Twice or more, and he will begin losing his audience. So, staying focused is important when it comes to passive income streams. If you create a blog and you talk about everything in the world, it’s highly unlikely that you are going to create the kind of audience that you need to monetize your creation.
Multi Level Marketing (MLM)
This can be another great passive income source for stay at home moms. Multi Level Marketing is more or less similar to affiliate marketing. The main difference is that MLM is more focused on the recruitment of new members. Your success is going to depend on your networking capabilities. If you are able to network, then you can make a lot of passive income with MLM. Let’s say you are a stay at home mom and you have a network of friends and family that is composed of hundreds of individuals. You will then set out to recruit these people to sell a product or service.
Multi Level
The great thing about MLM is that not only will you get paid when you sell the product, but you will also get paid when others who you have recruited make sells. At the end of the day, if you are at the top level, you get something from the people who you recruit and from others who your they themselves recruited.
Disadvantages of MLM
The one major disadvantage of MLM is that in most instances, people stay away because the entire thing sounds like a pyramid scheme. People tend to focus more on recruiting others into their networks, with the result that they lose focus on the product or service. The result is that people will probably run away from you if you try too hard to recruit them.
Amazon Associates
Amazon Associates is a subject that I have already touched on while talking about monetizing a blog. However, it would be an injustice to talk about Amazon Associates in only a few sentences. That’s because it is one of the most popular passive income streams for stay at home moms. Amazon Associates is more or less similar to affiliate marketing, save for the fact that you have thousands of products that you can sell. How Amazon Associates works is the following;
- You
need to first create a blog. And the blog needs to have an appreciable amount
of traffic. Otherwise Amazon Associates is not going to work for you. - Once
you have a viable site, you can then join Amazon Associates. - You
then create content in which you promote the products that are sold on Amazon.
Include your affiliate links and banners in the content so that people can buy
using your links. - Amazon
will pay you a commission per sale.
A final word on passive income for stay at home moms: Go for products that offer recurring income
Okay, those are some of the most popular passive income ideas for stay at home moms. Before I wrap up, there are a few things that I need to point out, however. One of these is that it’s better to find, when it comes to affiliate marketing, products that offer recurring payments. What happens is that for some products, you get paid once off, while for others, you get paid on a recurring scale, for as long as the people that you referred continue to make monthly payments.
Recurring income is the best because it ensures that you will continue to get paid even if your blog or YouTube channels is no longer in existence. Whereas with once off payments, you need to constantly produce new content in order to continue making sales. That’s it! That’s all about passive income for stay at home moms. Feel free to leave a comment below if you have something to say. Otherwise have a good day.
