Comparing Apples-to-Apples

Talking to a sales rep is almost useless because they will always say their product is better than the competitors. I have been working with TrustPilot and Shopper Approved since 2015. In the end, Google is the one who calls the shots because the reviews end up in their platform (Google Ads, Google Shopping, Google Organic).

There are 33 companies that are licensed by Google to syndicate your ratings into Google Ads CPC text ads. These types of ratings are called Seller Ratings and here’s the list of all 33 companies.

In addition to the 33 companies that can syndicate Seller Ratings into Google CPC text ads, there are 19 companies that can syndicate Product Ratings into Google Shopping PLAs.

TrustPilot AND Shopper Approved are on both lists! You can do Seller Ratings and Product Ratings.

Now comes the “Apples-to-Apples” comparison. Every company that’s approved by Google to syndicate reviews MUST FOLLOW GOOGLE’S XML FORMAT! Google doesn’t make a special program for one specific company. All 33 companies must submit the same formatted XML feed. And guess what? Here’s the sample that Google says to follow:
https://developers.google.com/product-review-feeds/sample/

Since both companies have to submit the same formatted XML feed into Google, all other features might be upsells or things you’ll be paying for, but never use.

Choosing TrustPilot or Shopper Approved

Choosing between TrustPilot and Shopper Approved comes down to whether you’re running an Ecommerce or Service-Based Business.
Both companies have large clients like BHPhotoVideo. To see a live example, click the link and scroll down and see TrustPilot and Shopper Approved as “Review Providers” https://www.google.com/shopping/ratings/account/metrics?q=bhphotovideo.com&c=US&v=2&hl=en

Service-Based Business – If you run a service-based business, you only need Seller Reviews. In this case, you should go with Shopper Approved.

Ecommerce Websites – If you have an ecommerce site that does less than 1500 transactions per month, you should look into Shopper Approved. If you get 1500-3000 transactions per month, you should get a demo from both TrustPilot and Shopper Approved. If your site gets more than 3000 transactions per month, you may want to lean toward TrustPilot. While both companies can service large ecommerce sites, TrustPilot has many more large ‘enterprise’ sized companies on their platform. Shopper Approved is great for smaller companies doing less than 3000 transactions per month.

Upsells and stuff you don’t need to be paying for:

If your main goal is to get stars to show on your Google Ads, whether you run an ecommerce or service-based website, you need to consider your budget. For instance, do you need “Hootsuite integration”? How about the ability to see your “Google Search dashboard” within TrustPilot? Would your marketer even use these tools?

As a marketing agency ourselves, our clients only care about one thing

What goes into the pricing of
TrustPilot and Shopper Approved

Here’s the real breakdown between the price difference.

Shopper Approved
– ZERO outside investment. They are a family-owned company. Shopper Approved isn’t as ‘profit-driven’ as TrustPilot.
– They have around 40 employees.

TrustPilot
– $55,000,000 in outside funding. Guess who has to pay back those investors? YOU!
– 700 Employees!
You can read about it on TrustPilot’s website:

Conclusion

No matter what company you choose, you’ll be in good hands. If you run an ecommerce company doing 3000+ transactions per month, TrustPilot may be a better fit since they are built for that target audience. Shopper Approved is normally a better fit for small to mid-sized businesses that are either ecommerce or service-based businesses. Also, look at what fits your budget. If you don’t like Shopper Approved, you can always export your reviews and import them into TrustPilot (or any other Google Approved review aggregator).
