So, what the heck are Seller Ratings and why are they important? Well, if you only just asking this question, then you have been missing out on a lot! Carry out a search Google today and you will notice that there is a five star based system on some of the results. These are what are referred to as “star rating extensions.” Star ratings are composed of Seller and Product ratings.
Seller ratings show up in Google Shopping and in Google Text Ads. They highlight the kind of reviews that a particular Seller has received from customers.
Product ratings, on the other hand, are more concerned with a particular product, such as an HP laptop, as an example. You can see examples of Seller and Product ratings in the above screenshot. In this article, I look at Seller Ratings and whether or not you can get them on Shopify.

Let me repeat, if you have not already been harnessing the power of Seller Ratings for your eCommerce business, then you need to get off your bottom and start doing some work! Seller ratings are really, really important. How important? Well, how about 17% important! That, according to Google, is the kind of CTR boost that sellers who have star ratings on their Google Text Ads and in Google Shopping can expect! Clearly, Seller ratings are not something that a business that wishes to achieve growth can afford to ignore
Does Shopify Support Google Seller Ratings?
This is a question that I get a lot from people. Mostly, they want to know whether or not the reviews that they get on their Shopify accounts will get them Seller Ratings in Google Text Ads and in Google Shopping. Let’s assume here that you have an online store that sells mobile phones. If you are running your store on Shopify, then people will be able to leave comments on the phones that they buy. You can display these comments on your website, but does this feedback contribute towards Seller Ratings in Google?
The answer, unfortunately, is, NO! The reviews that you get on your Shopify store do not automatically get you Seller Ratings in your Google Ads an in Google Shopping! However, all is not lost, as you will see below!
Google Licenses a Number of Companies for Seller Ratings.
Visit this page and you will notice that Google licenses about 32 companies to syndicate reviews for use in Seller ratings. As you can see in the above screenshot, Shopify is not one of these companies.
Google also has a list for companies that are licensed to syndicate data for use in Product ratings. As you can see in the screenshot below, Shopify is, once again, missing from the list.
You will also notice that there are some companies that appear on both lists. These would be the companies to sign up with if you are interested in both product and seller ratings.
How to Get Google Seller Ratings on Shopify
Before you throw in the towel, here is a bit of good news. Remember what I said about not being able to get Google Seller ratings directly from Shopify? Well, that wasn’t EXACTLY the complete picture. Indeed, if you need to have your Shopify reviews show up as Seller and product ratings, this can easily be done! However, you are going to need to sign up with one of the above mentioned third party, Google approved, online reviews aggregator. Here is a look at a couple of these companies.

How much does Shopper Approved cost?

Verified Reviews is another company that you can take a look at if you are looking to get Google Seller Ratings on Shopify. They are also approved for Product Ratings.
Another company that you can look at as far as online reviews are concerned is eKomi. The unique thing about eKomi is that they actually respond to the reviews that you get from your customers and dispute any negative feedback that you may get. They do both Seller and Product ratings. However, they are more expensive because they are a fully managed system.
You can use an app to get Google Seller Ratings
Other than the above mentioned third party review aggregators, you can also use an app to get Google Seller Ratings on Shopify. To be honest, this is something that most people end up doing. However, using apps pitfalls.
How does it work?
Remember what I said about Google licensing about 32 companies to syndicate reviews for use in Seller ratings? Well, another way of getting Seller Ratings is by signing up for Google Customer Reviews.
Once people have purchased your products, they will have the option to participate in a survey. This data is used by Google for Seller and Product ratings.
Now, most of the apps that are out there use this feature to enable people to get Google Seller Ratings on Shopify. Should you decide to use one of these apps on your Shopify eCommerce website, people will receive the Google Customer Survey opt-in option after making a purchase. The feedback that they leave is then sent directly to Google for use in your seller and product ratings.
Examples of Shopify Apps that enable you to get
This is one of the apps that you can install on your Shopify store that enable you to get Google Seller ratings. The app promises easy integration and great support. This app costs a one time fee of $25.
This is another app that you can install on your Shopify shop to enable you to get Google Seller ratings. This app costs $5 per month and states that once your customers have opted in, Google handles everything with regard to the Google Customer Survey.
Do we recommend these apps?
The Google Customer Review apps are another way through which you can get Google Seller ratings on Shopify. Indeed, most people find them while looking for a free way through which they can get Google Customer Reviews for their Shopify stores. However, they are not something that I recommend, when compared to third party review aggregators such as Shopper Approved and Verified Reviews. True, the apps that I have just mentioned appear cheaper, but if you are really serious about Seller and Product ratings for your Shopify store, you are not going to want to skimp on costs!
The disadvantages of using apps when compared to 3rd party review aggregators
The following are the disadvantages of using apps to get Google Seller Ratings for your Shopify store;
- Apps such as Easy Google Customer Reviews are, to say the least, pretty basic. Most of them actually suck! They only focus on stars ratings and reviews on Google. However, third party review aggregators are able to extend the display of reviews to Facebook, Twitter, other search engine (Bing) and platforms (Trip Advisor, Amazon, Yellow Pages) etc…
- They do not send emails proactively to customer so the rate of response is way lower than is the case with third party review aggregators such as Shopper Approved. Third party review aggregators do not simply wait for customers to opt-into leaving a review. This hardly ever happens anyway! Instead, they send your customers co-branded emails to gather their ratings and comments. These are then displayed across the platforms listed above.
- When using these apps, Merchants do not have any control over Google Reviews. There’s no dashboard to manage them and they are stuck with what they get. That’s probably the biggest issue!
If you are only interested in Google Customer Reviews, then this is something that you can honestly do on your own without having to pay anyone. However, the third party aggregators that I mentioned above will get you the full package as far the management on online reviews is concerned.
